The workshop will be conducted on July 24-26, 2024 at Saint Louis University in St Louis, Missouri.  The final day will conclude at 12:30 pm for the convenience of departure transportation. 

In addition to the on-site event, the workshop will include 3 required pre-workshop asynchronous sessions with new content. There will also be a post-workshop synchronous session for participants to share their experiences in applying the knowledge and skills learned from the workshop. Past participants will join that final session.   More information on these virtual sessions is included on the Schedule page.  

The registration fee includes a dinner and social event on the second day at a nearby Topgolf facility. No golf experience or equipment is necessary to enjoy the fun indoors.  Participants may also enjoy the networking without any golf activity.

Continuing Education Hours

 

The workshop has been approved for 25 Continuing Education Hours and is being co-sponsored by the Missouri Physical Therapy Association.  Certificates will be distributed at the completion of the workshop.

Objectives

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

      Describe the Landscape of Higher Education
 

  • Describe the characteristics of higher education in general and as they apply to your home institution, including mission, type, administrative structure, faculty roles, workload, and tenure and promotion.

  • Describe federal laws that impact students and faculty.

  • Describe some of the unique features of PTA education and options to manage them.

  • Identify trends and resources in higher education and PT/PTA education specifically. 

      Advance Career and Professional Development
 

  • Identify your personality style using a color profile and how to communicate with and relate better to others, including how to create or maintain an educational environment that supports, challenges, and motivates people from all color profiles.

  • Create a faculty development plan based upon a personal assessment to articulate a path for career growth, including promotion and/or tenure at your home institution.

      Design, Deliver, and Assess Student-Centered Learning
 

  • Apply philosophies of instructional design and development to your individual courses.

  • Design an effective presentation using a systematic approach.

  • Integrate active learning strategies to ensure student centered learning.

  • Design strategies of formative and summative assessment of student learning.

  • Describe applications of technology across face-to-face and hybrid/blended instructional delivery models in physical therapy education.

  • Analyze instructional technology tools for cognitive, psychomotor, and affective physical therapy learning goals.

  • Discuss facilitators and barriers to learner engagement in classroom instructional technologies.

      Describe Accreditation and its Impact on Instruction
 

  • Compare and contrast institutional versus specialized accreditation.

  • Identify components of the CAPTE accreditation process.

  • Describe the CAPTE Standards and Required Elements for Accreditation, particularly as they apply to faculty roles and program curriculum.

      Develop and Maintain a Scholarly Agenda
 

  • Develop a plan to achieve a scholarly agenda as per CAPTE criteria and institutional expectations.

  • Substantiate your resource needs (including time) for career development.

      Balance and Enhance Personal and Professional Responsibilities
 

  • Determine balance of personal and professional responsibilities and how to manage effectively.

  • Analyze techniques of stress and conflict management.

  • Describe the scope of student advising (academic, personal, behavioral) and methods to assess and promote professional behavior.
